TEACHING REPORT

The following reports the 1993 activities of an Associate Lecturer (Level A Academic, who was notified of promotion to Level B late in 1993). These were devoted principally to teaching. Due to absence overseas on study leave, this report was prepared with the assistance of other members of the teaching staff.

TEACHING in 1993

Medical Science: Human Life Sciences 2

Lectures: 10: 4 on reproduction, 6 on kidney.

Tutorials: 6, repeated, as introduction to practical classes (= 12 h); 12, repeated, as follow-up to practical classes (= 24 h); 4 on essay writing, learning, data presentation; 1 on lectures.

Practicals: 13, each of 3 h, repeated (= 78 h), on cell physiology (2), neurophysiology (5), respiration (1), cardiovascular physiology (2), renal physiology (1), endocrinology (2).

Examination: short answer questions and multiple choice questions (of the 5 alternatives, one correct, variety).

Dentistry 2

Lectures: 6, on haematology-immunology.

Practicals: 2, each of 3 h, one given 4 times and one given twice, on blood and endocrinology (= 21 h).

Tutorials: 4, each of 1 h, as follow-up to practical classes.

Examination: short answer questions and multiple choice questions (of the 5 alternatives, one correct, variety).

Medicine 2

Practicals: 7, each of 3 h, 6 given twice, on renal physiology, cardiovascular, endocrinology, nerve and respiration.

Tutorials: 4, each of 1 h, as follow-up to practical classes.

Examination: short answer questions.

Pharmacy 1

Lectures: 20: 4 on haematology-immunology, 3 on reproduction, 7 on renal physiology, 6 on gastrointestinal physiology.

Examination: multiple choice questions (of the 5 alternatives, one correct, variety).

Science 2 Auxiliary

Lectures: 6, on haematology-immunology (all given with Dentistry 2).

Tutorials: 11, as follow-up to practical classes.

Quizzes: marking of these for all students.

Examination: short answer questions and multiple choice questions (of the 5 alternatives, one correct, variety).

Science 2

Lectures: 5, on haematology-immunology (all given with Dentistry 2).

Tutorials: 6.

Practicals: 3, each of 3 h, on renal physiology, neurophysiology, endocrinology.

Examination: short answer questions and multiple choice questions (of the 5 alternatives, one correct, variety).

Science 3

Practicals: 5, of 5 h (= 25 h).

Human Life Sciences 3

16 small group work sessions of 1 h each.

Student consultation

During the year all students in all courses taught asked questions on the course material and considerable time was spent on assisting students in this way. Also acted as adviser on subject choices for 1st and 2nd year students at beginning of the year.

Course management

Course supervisor for Science 2 Auxiliary.

Course co-ordination, together with other academics (for Dentistry 2 and Science 2).

Evaluation of teaching

Co-ordinated the student feedback questionnaires on courses taught to Dentistry, Science Auxiliary, Science 2 and Human Life Sciences 2.

Constant informal feedback received through contact with students and relayed to Department.

Teaching courses

Continued to participate in workshops run by the Centre for Teaching and Learning.
