Medical Science: Human Life Sciences 2

Lectures: 6, on respiration.

Tutorials: 26, each of 1 h, on all topics of the curriculum.

Practicals: 26, each of 3 h, 2, each of 4 h, in all topics of the curriculum (in-charge of 12 classes on: MEMPOT, respiration, and toad skin).

Dentistry 2

Practical classes: 6, each of 3 h, on skeletal muscle and respiration (in-charge of all classes).

Medicine 2

Tutorials: 8, of 1 h, on sodium transport.

Practical classes: 13, each of 3 h, on toad skin (in-charge); electrophysiology of nerve, skeletal muscle.

Science 2 Auxiliary

Acting course supervisor: First semester.

Tutorials: 9, each of 1 h, on all topics of the curriculum.

Practical classes: 7, each of 1 h, on haematology, MEMPOT, blood pressure, and reflexes (in-charge of all classes).

Medical Science (and Science 3)/ Neurosciences 3/ Cardiovascular 3

Lectures: 1 on voltage clamp techniques.

Practical classes: 6, each of 3 h, on AXOVACS (in charge), human cardiovascular system, fatigue, response to exercise; 1 of 6 h, on cardiovascular system of anaesthetised rabbit.

Paper sessions: 8, each of 1 h, on Cardiovascular Physiology.

ASSESSMENT

Set and marked exams on lectures; organized, set, and marked practical exams for HLS2.

Set and marked exams on practical component of end of semester exams for Medicine 2 and Dentistry 2.

Marked two long reports for Human Life Sciences 2.

Marked two essays for Human Life Sciences 2.

ADMINISTRATION

Service to Department

Assessment of computer software: Educational computer software packages were assessed, particularly programmes that could eventually replace some practicals, such as the effects of vasoactive substances in the anaesthetized rabbit, or transport of sodium across a toad skin.

Course administrative work: In collaboration with Roger Dampney, organization, word processing and editing of the Course Guide and Physiology practical book for the Human Life Sciences 2 course.

Organization of the timetable for practicals and tutorials for the Physiology part of the Human Life Sciences 2 course.

As a member of the Human Life Sciences 2 Interdepartmental Committee participation in discussions and organization of amendments to the course in order to improve its running.

Organization of the timetable for practicals and tutorials for the Physiology Auxiliary 2 course.

On behalf of Rebecca Mason, preparation and submission of an application to the Human Ethical Review Committee for the urine practical.

Preparation and submission of an application to the Animal Ethical Review Committee for the transport of sodium across the toad skin practical.

Service to University

As Discrimination Adviser, assistance was provided to members of staff and students with problems relating to discrimination matters (1990-present).
