Associate Professor Simon Carlile

Simon Carlile joined the Department of Physiology in September 1993. He has since built a state of the art laboratory for the study of a range of auditory neuroscientific research using more than $1 million in grant funds from NHMRC, ARC, DSTO and other funding bodies. Recent work has concentrated on the developments and application of Virtual Auditory Space. The laboratory has a number of patent registrations on technology that has arisen from this research. The laboratory has a high international profile and has attracted self-funded postdoctoral workers from the UK, Switzerland and Germany and members of the laboratory are regularly invited to speak at International Conferences. The laboratory currently has three PhD students, two Postdoctoral Fellows and a Research Assistant and collaborations with the Department of Electrical Engineering (University of Sydney) and the Chinese University (Hong Kong).

Simon also plays a leadership role in the application of Information Technology to education through his role as Assistant Pro-Vice Chancellor (IT). The University, like many organisations, is undergoing significant change driven by the world wide growth in IT, and as Chief Information Officer he plays the key role in setting and driving University strategy to deal with these changes. Simon combines this role with his commitment to research and teaching Neuroscience. He is also on the Board of two companies.
