During 1996, a breeding colony of CF-knockout mice [cf(-/-)] was successfully established . These mice were used in patch-clamp and microspectrofluorimetric studies aimed at elucidating the role of cftr in salivary cell function. It was found that cftr does not control the Na+/H+ exchangers in the apical or the basolateral membranes of the duct cells.
