During 1996, a technique was also established for using microspectrofluorimetry to measure intracellular ion concentrations in isolated and perfused mouse mandibular main ducts. Using this technique the H+ transporting systems were characterized in the apical and basolateral membranes of salivary duct cells. These include Na+-H+ exchangers in both the apical and basolateral membranes. Importantly, no evidence was found for the K+-H+ exchanger or the anion exchanger which have been previously hypothesized to be in the apical membrane of duct cells.
