Our Research Laboratories
are located at the new Australian School for Advanced Medicine at
Macquarie University. Senior investigators include Professor Paul M
Pilowsky and A/Professor Ann K Goodchild who retain Honorary
appointments at the University of Sydney within the discipline of
Physiology. The group is currently enrolling Honours and PhD students
interested in contributing to studies on how the central nervous
system controls the airways, breathing and circulation: the ABC of
medicine. In particular, we are interested in the interactions
between these vital systems, the function and morphology of the
neurons that control them and the neurotransmitters and other
chemicals that these neurons release. An eclectic range of techniques
are available for use depending on the question to be addressed.
These include: in vivo intracellular or extracellular
electrophysiology, pharmacology, molecular biology and
immunocytochemistry. Biomedical engineering will be available in
2008. The group also uses telemetry and is now investigating
autonomic function in critically patients in the intensive care
unit.
